Bach’s music is eternal. Mathematically precise, yet emotionally profound, with a universal appeal that transcends time.

Since 1955 Dorset singers and instrumentalists have discovered the magic of his cantatas, initially under the guidance of legendary Bach specialist Paul Steinitz.

Over 70 years later we still gather together three times a year and follow much the same schedule as was established back then, and It’s been my privilege to take over the leadership of these singing weekends, joining with dedicated enthusiasts to delve into the riches of this great music.

The Dorset Bach Cantata Club is open to all, and I’d love for you to join us. You don’t have to be a German speaker or know a lot about baroque performance practice – we spend time on things like phrasing and diction through the course of each weekend, and along the way learn more about the circumstances of the composition of each cantata, as well as exploring some insights as to why Bach might have set a particular text in a particular way.

But most of all it’s about singing and bringing great joy and fulfilment through Bach’s music. Each weekend concludes with an informal concert, which while is open to a small audience of family and friends is really mainly for us, providing a measure of achievement which is inevitably felt after this total immersion experience!
